The manager of a popular restaurant on Riccarton Rd says changes to the main thoroughfare will hurt its business, taking away badlyneeded car parks. Bus priority measures from the Deans Ave intersection into central Riccarton were approved by the city council infrastructure, transport and environment committee on Thursday. Arjee Bhajee, an Indian restaurant located near the corner of Deans Ave and Riccarton Rd, said

that taking away on-street parking used by its customers could lead to decreased patronage. Manager Akshay Kumar said authorities had “no idea how the changes would affect businesses in the area. “As far as I know the people who have proposed this idea don’t understand how much we need that parking. “Businesses will lose a lot of parking and we are one of the few buildings that have on-street parking in the area,’’ he said.

Bus lanes down Riccarton Rd and traffic lights at the Deans Ave roundabout were approved, in spite of some opposition from businesses concerned of losing parking. Deans Ave Precinct Society chairwoman Claire Mulcock said the Arjee Bhajee was a “small voice overall. She said the new bus lanes would ease congestion and traffic signals would make the intersection safer. “The idea of lights have been on the cards for many years, she said. “The overall benefits outweigh

the negative effects,â€? she said. The city council expects construction to start in late January or February next year, with the traffic signals first. Neighbourhood Week is coming around for another year with applications for funding available now. Last year the Deans Ave Precinct Society had a barbecue in Hagley Park getting the community together for food, drinks and laughs. Deans Ave Precinct Society chairwoman Claire Mulcock said it was a great opportunity for the community to come together and meet who lives around them. “We put on sausages and salads and drinks for the community,” she said.

“We get funding for food and do the rest ourselves. Last year we had a group of about eight to 10 Irish people who didn’t know each other but were all working on the rebuild so it gave them a chance to meet the neighbours. “We will do the same thing again this year.” As well as Neighbourhood Week they put on a bit of a do in March for those that have moved into the area at the start of the year. “In early March we had a weekday evening to get people together at the start of the year,” she said. Neighbourhood Week is an

annual event held in October and November aimed at bringing people together. This may be a small get together of a few households or groups or a larger gathering. It’s about getting to know people who live close to you. The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has set aside funding that is allocated to individuals or groups that hold Neighbourhood Week activities. Applications for funding close end of August and can be made online at http://www. ccc.govt.nz/culture-and-community/events-and-festivals/ annual-events/neighbourhood-week/

Stolen ute and hobby race car back with owner

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Temporary liquor ban

The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has approved a temporary liquor ban for the surrounding streets around Riccarton Park on November 14, the last day of Christchurch Cup and Show Week. Police and Canterbury Racing made deputations to the board in support of the idea for a liquor ban. The board agreed and have sent it off to the city council’s staff to work out where and how it will work. • Readers’ letters, p7

BY TOM DOUDNEY The power of social media has led to the speedy return of a hobby race car, ute and trailer stolen from Wigram. Mark Pedersen was in disbelief when he walked out his front door at 6am on a Sunday morning to find that while he slept, someone had stolen the $50,000 ute and driven off with the trailer carrying his $7000 race car attached. However, he was reunited with his vehicles only eight hours later after a Facebook post he made appealing for sightings of the car went viral, being shared more than 2000 times. The vehicles were found only 3km away in Halswell thanks to a tip off from someone who saw the post. “It’s quite amazing and humbling,” Mr Pedersen said of the response. “I think it proves there are a lot of nice people in this world, aren’t there?” He said four people had called him with sightings of the car after seeing his post and a Port Marlborough worker had texted him to let him know that they would keep an eye out in case

Mr Pedersen was delighted about getting his property back but baffled by the actions of the thief, who took only a cellphone charger, sunglasses and a pair of his son’s sports shoes from the ute, in spite of the presence of more valuable items. Before the theft, he had been planning to drive in the 2kCup endurance race in Timaru that day and the car was packed full of racing gear, barbecue equip-

ment, containers with 100-litres of fuel, as well as his wallet. Mr Pedersen said he didn’t know who had stolen the vehicles but he had some suspicions. A spare set of keys to the ute had gone missing within the last month while contractors were visiting his house to carry out repairs. The ute had not been broken into and the alarm was not set off, meaning someone had used the keys to enter. “It’s strange but if it’s the

Orion has reduced Gardiners Rd to one lane until September while it works on its new Northern Loop Project. The $45m project adds electrical capacity to northern Christchurch and additional resilience to the city’s power network. The project includes construction of a new substation near Johns and Sawyers Arms Rds, and installation of 22km of underground high voltage cable that links the new substation to Orion’s existing substations at Papanui and Rawhiti Domain in New Brighton.

people I suspect, they are very young and pretty stupid people. They were probably just looking to steal the ute but it just happened that I had pre-loaded my vehicle with the race car and trailer that night.” He believed expenses relating to the theft, including changing the locks on the ute and buying his son new shoes, would probably cost him about $1000. The said the incident and a subsequent telling off from his partner had taught him a lesson. He wouldn’t be leaving things such as his wallet in the car overnight again and the race car had been put into storage for the time being.

Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team will begin work on the wastewater pipes on the corner of Riccarton Rd and Division St today. To manage the traffic flow, it will be shifting lanes around the work site. Until the work is complete, traffic will not be able to turn right from Riccarton Rd onto Division St. Businesses will have access to their premises at all times while repairs are going on. There will still be access for delivery trucks turning left into Division St from Riccarton Rd but drivers should take care around the work site as the lanes will be tighter than usual. The work is expected to last up to five days.

Leading fellow young delegates Middleton Grange’s Evangeline Maffey has been selected to head the United Nations New Zealand Youth Delegation to The Hague next year, and is nervous about her big speech in front of 4000 people. Andrew King speaks to her REPRESENTING: Evangeline Maffey at a mock UN meeting where she represented the United Kingdom. Next year she will head the New Zealand delegation to The Hague.

Hi Eva, so what made you get into the UN Youth? I got involved in United Nations Youth New Zealand in Year 11, because of a suggestion from my history teacher at the time. I was told that it was a good opportunity and it was. I have been involved since then. How long have you been in it? I have been in it for three years. You were recently elected to head the New Zealand delegation to The Hague in Holland, what does that mean to you? I had to apply for it and go through an interview process. After 20 names had been called I

was preparing myself to put on a brave face, but to my absolute surprise, my name was the last one on the list as head delegate of the trip. I am the one who makes the speeches to all the people we visit. I’m basically the face of the New Zealand delegation. I have to make the opening speech to around 4000 students which is pretty nerve-racking. What do you want to bring to the table on the world stage? New Zealand already has a good name at the conference. We have a high calibre of students that have gone and are going to conferences like this. Being the head, I want to make sure everyone feels included and make the strongest team possible. I want us to look out for each other.

Come and see us today for a full range of fresh fruit and vegetables

What does the UNYNZ do for regions like Canterbury? We are run by Canterbury University. They run events that simulate the workings of the United Nations, along with workshops and events that allow youth to interact with diplomats and other notable dignitaries. What is best thing about the UN? I think that UNYNZ gives you a good career path. I took a university course on the European Union because I am totally interested in it. Most people that do these events want to work with the UN at some point. It really encourages you to get involved in international issues. Where do you see it taking you? Next year I plan to study international relations, anthropology and law at Canterbury University. I owe it to UNYNZ giving me that drive and career direction. Then somewhere in the future I may work in a non-governmental occupation or a non-profit organisation. What are some of the goals of the UN Youth? The main goals are to give young people a place to voice their views and allow their opinions to be heard. It allows the youth of New Zealand to show what they want. We want to get a wide range of people involved to show the world that young people have something to contribute too.

to The Hague Do you take many trips for the UNYNZ? They have a few international ones throughout the Pacific and Australia. But the one in The Hague next year is the biggest for our age. We will be heading to New York, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Geneva, Amsterdam and of course The Hague where the conference will be held. Is the UN something you saw yourself getting into? I thought I was going to be a teacher. I think I was keen on the primary school age but I didn’t really know once I got involved in the UN Youth, it just swept me up. At what age are you too old to be in the UNYNZ? I think it is for people up to the age of 25. It’s run by Canterbury University students who volunteer their time to help out and run it. You can be heavily involved after high school. Who do you look up to at the UN? I would have to say Ban Kimoon. He has made himself a real figure in the UN or Helen Clark obviously. It is great to see a female leader and it is good for New Zealand. How do others get involved? We have a website that has heaps of info on it. All the events are on it. All the email addresses of the regional presidents are on that page as well so you can talk with them about getting involved. We have a Facebook page which will keep you updated. Getting involved at school is how I got into it.

CLOSED: The Blue Gum Lodge Motel has shut after more than 50 years.

Motel closes doors for motorway TOM DOUDNEY

ASPIRING LEADERS: The United Nation’s Youth New Zealand led by Evangeline Maffey (front left), will head away to The Hague next year. Why should they get involved? For me it’s mainly about personal development, building great skills and it gives you a different perspective. It raises your awareness of global issues. I think it is really worthwhile to get involved with these things. It leads to heaps of other avenues. It really opens doors for youth. What do your friends think of you being in it? They are pretty excited, my school was stoked for me to get this opportunity. We are trying to encourage that awareness and get more people involved in it. It’s been a real honour to get selected. What do you do for fun?

I really enjoy organising events and getting involved in school projects. I really like making environments where people can have fun. I love reading. I am really getting into Jane Austen at the moment, Pride and Prejudice is my favourite. Were you born in Christchurch? I was born in the small town of Hororata, we moved to Christchurch when I was about two-anda-half. Now I live in Cashmere. We have been there for about 15 years. • You can help Eva raise money for her trip by visiting wwwgivealittle.co.nz/cause/ eva4thimun

After 52 years of service there will be no more vacancies at Blue Gum Lodge Motel. The motel on Main South Rd, north of Rolleston, closed its doors for good on July 31 because its land is needed to make way for Stage 2 of the Southern Motorway. Construction of the motorway is set to begin early next year. Owners Michele and John Thomson say they are moving on with no regrets after 10 years in charge. The Crown bought the motel land three years ago, about a year after plans for the layout of the motorway were made public. “Once the plan came out we knew it was eventually going to happen and I think the road is definitely needed,” Mrs Thomson said. “The traffic over the last 10

years has just increased and the accident rate has increased too.” They had not initially been thrilled with the prospect of moving. “At first we thought ‘oh god, this place was doing really well’ but realistically it is for the best and it has been a good outcome in the end.” The couple have bought The Bridge Restaurant and Bar in Prebbleton and took over the running of it on Monday. They had a lot of fond memories of their time at the motel and had made many good friends. While the motel has been closed, it has not yet been abandoned. Motel manager Dot McDonald will continue to live on site for the time being, as will four couples living in their own caravans.

Selwyn House’s young leader of the future

▌READERS’ ▌ LETTERS

BY ANDREW KING

Leadership has a new face at Selwyn House School. Ella Stephens, 13, is recipient of the school’s Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award. The school sets the criteria for what is needed to receive the award. It encourages all year 8 students to apply as part of their leadership academy. Students write a letter of application then the school decides who to give the prestigious award to. Team leader of year 7 and 8 Greg Pierce said it was great to read the letters the students had written. “It’s a good chance for them to reflect about what they have achieved out in the community and at school with the younger girls,” he said. “Ella just has the most lovely nature, generous with her time, honest and participates across everything including sports and music. “She is a genuine all rounder and has a bit of steely determination, that’s why she was chosen to receive this award.” Selwyn House put all their year 8 girls through a leadership academy that helps them develop the skills they need to become

FUTURE LEADER: Ella Stephens is this year’s recipient of the Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award at Selwyn House School. influential women in society. “We believe leaders are made not born,” Mr Pierce said. “We are developing leadership skills in all the girls with a focus on the five building blocks – finding a voice, participation, collaboration, organisation, making a difference. “Ella has a good spread over those areas.”

Mr Pierce said when it was announced in an assembly she was the recipient, she was shocked. “She was very excited. Very surprised and very humble just a couple of the good traits she has.” Sir Peter Blake was one of New Zealand’s finest yachtsmen and was knighted in 1995. He was tragically killed in 2001 by pirates on the Amazon River.

In response to your question about a temporary liquor ban surrounding Riccarton Park for Riccarton Cup day, consider this. Why should we have to have a special ban for this? There should be a ban on drinking in the streets anywhere in New Zealand, anytime of the year. Drinking, is a social phenomena, which should be in the home, in a bar or hotel and in a club perhaps, depending on what sort of a club, we are talking about, but it should never ever be in the streets anywhere, at any time. Streets are for traffic and not for drinking, no exceptions. Think about it. – Ray Rinsma, Avonhead. The criteria of liquor bans is to encourage safe and welcome environments by helping reduce any negative impact with alcohol consumption in public

places. Temporary liquor bans are nothing new and apply to almost any major sporting event or fixture nationwide. The issue of safety is paramount also in consideration of some alcohol-induced patrons being devoid of vigilance when encountering traffic on our roads. The responsible attitude by Spreydon-Heathcote community board in instigating a liquor ban on surrounding roads and streets during Addington cup week should be portrayed by Riccarton-Wigram community board in respect of a similar ban in those roads in proximity to Riccarton raceway during the cup meeting. This action would be condoned by many nearby residents, incensed by alcoholrelated debris they invariably encounter on or near their properties following this event. – Gary Knight, Hoon Hay.

Off you go, Maggie BY ANDREW KING

With little fuss and a flap of the wings the magpie saga was over. It has been quite a journey for Maggie the magpie – who was returned to her family in a West Melton tree. She had been rescued by firefighters then taken by the SPCA animal ambulance for treatment at the Hornby Vet Clinic after tangling herself in string at the top of a very tall tree. After being rescued, a course of antibiotics was prescribed, and they kept her in for observation for a few days. SPCA spokeswoman Raina Roberts said they were pleased that they could save the bird. “Ultimately our aim is to ensure all animals are free from pain and distress so it is always great to see

any animal return to full health after it has been sick or injured,” she said. Maggie will not have a big bill to pay on her way out either with the vet providing all the treatment for free. “The Hornby clinic has done this pro-bono so there is no expense to us [SPCA]. “We appreciate the efforts of vets who regularly treat wild animals at their own cost.”

The Rotary Club of Hornby has honoured three long-serving members. After 53 years with Rotary, Les Hayes along with long-serving members Joe Kubiak and Brian Lee were awarded life membership to the club. This is awarded to only a select few in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the activities of the club over many years. The club calculates that Mr

Eat whitebait from the Heathcote and Avon Rivers at your own peril - it is like eating “sewage.” Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said consuming whitebait caught from the city’s polluted waterways was ill-advised. Whitebaiting season starts this Saturday (August 15) and runs until November 30. Dr Humphrey said whitebait in the city’s rivers is actually “brown bait” due to pollution with the potential to cause crippling stomach bugs, like giardia cysts and cryptosporidium “People catch it put it in a bucket and freeze it. So it is frozen in its own sewage. Cooking doesn’t make a difference,” he said. He said thawing whitebait

Hayes would have attended more than 3000 weekly meetings. Between the three they would total close to 8000 meetings and countless hours of voluntary service to the community and international Rotary projects. The projects they have been involved with are too numerous to mention, numbering in the hundreds and raising funds in the hundreds of thousands for charitable causes. A good part of their lives has

blocks was likely to contaminate kitchens. The news comes after the release of a city council report revealed the worst waterways, strangled by contaminants from the rebuild, cracked sewers and faeces from dogs and waterfowls. It is the first comprehensive report since the earthquakes, with 44 sites tested monthly last year. The city is divided into five waterway catchments, with the Heathcote area recording the poorest water quality of all catchments. Linwood Canal, which runs along Linwood Ave was tied for the worst site with Haytons Stream at Retention Basin. Tied for second worst was Curletts Rd Stream, upstream of the Heathcote River, and Heathcote River at Templetons Rd. All but 11 sites failed to meet regional council guidelines for

Escherichia-coli. Dr Humphrey said the main source of faecal pollutants, outside of human waste from sewer overflows, were dog and duck faeces. Feeding Mallard ducks on lawns and near riverways, and failing to pick up after their dogs, meant faeces were swept into waterways. “The Avon is a special river for whitebait because it is an incubator for the rest of Canterbury river,” he said. Eating fish from rivers, that do not have contaminated warning signs, was safe, he said. “The difference is you wash them, gut them, fillet them, and cook them,” he said Fish and Game environmental advisor Scott Pearson said eating one or two fish from the rivers was okay, but regularly eating fish from waterways may be less safe.

Young rhythmic gymnast soaring high BY KYLE KNOWLES Paris Taylor is used to standing on the top step of the podium. She added another win to her impressive resume last weekend, winning her section at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships. She has won every competition she has competed in, in New Zealand, this year. The 16-year-old Riccarton High School student won her Club A section by 3.1 points in Auckland last weekend and was happy with her performance. “Yeah I was, I had three routines and they were all pretty good, my last routine was the ribbon and I enjoy it the most, so I was pretty confident having that routine last.” Paris is an athlete who likes to know how she is placed in competitions and knew she could have missed the podium all together last weekend.

“I’m someone who likes to look at my scores when I’m competing. I will add scores out back to see where I’m coming. If I dropped all three of my throws in the ribbon (last weekend), I could’ve come last.” This was the first time Paris had been to the national secondary schools competition and now has her sights set on the full national competition in October. “My goal is to win nationals.” After that she wants to be picked in the New Zealand team, for the second time. The Diva Rhythmic Gymnastics Club member was part of the New Zealand team which headed to the Australian Gymnastics Championships in May this year. Paris said her parents were a big part of her success. She said they have put so much money, time and effort in to her gymnastics and feels like she is giving something back to them when she is standing on the podium. Paris also said the relationship with her coach, Bianca Stove, was key to her success. “She’s a really good coach. We spend so many hours a week training together

Silver medal for basketballers IN ACTION: Paris during her hoop routine at last year’s championships. and she knows how to deal with me at competitions and what to say to me.” To maintain this success she has a massive training schedule. She trains Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for fourand-a-half hours each day and sometimes another four-and-ahalf hour session on a Sunday. “Some days it goes fast and some days it goes really slow but I know I have to work hard”. Not to be outdone, Paris’ younger sister Anna, finished second in her section at the secondary schools’ champs last weekend. She finished behind Cashmere High School’s Maggie Takami, who is now in Hungary competing. Paris was due to compete at the South Island championships at the weekend and the North Island championships next weekend.

STAR: Allenvale School student and New Zealand Special Olympic basketballer, Bradley Garner, with teacher, Megan Gare.

Stage three submissions must be received by Friday 4 September, 2015. The Independent Hearings Panel makes final decisions on the Council proposals.

Allenvale School student Bradley Garner was part of the New Zealand Special Olympics basketball team which won silver at the World Summer Games. They finished in the silver medal position in division two, which was held in Los Angeles. Garner, 20, was the top points scorer in every match the New Zealand side played. The division two ranking is the highest grading of any of the five New Zealand teams that have participated in the World Games since 1991. In the division two gold medal match against the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand went down 29-15. The team was coached by inaugural Canterbury Rams player, Al Robson, who also coached the New Zealand 2011 team at Athens to a division three silver medal. Robson said the side had their chances in the final but things didn’t quite go their way against the bigger more experienced UAE team. That left the side in sixth overall. At the medal ceremony, much to the New Zealand team’s surprise they were also presented with the trophy for outstanding sportsmanship. This was the first time it has ever been presented to a team by the hundreds of volunteers who helped, making sure the tourna-

ment ran smoothly. They voted for the team that demonstrated the true values of Special Olympics as well as being friendly, respectful, showing sportsmanship and out of the 75 basketball teams the Kiwis were voted number one. The team qualified for division two after a series of six, short, 9min grading games winning four of the six. They played Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago, Hungary, Great Britain, Indonesia and Italy, with quite a mix of playing styles. In their first pool game after the grading games New Zealand came up against Trinidad and Tobago again. The side came from behind to win 23-17 with Garner playing a leading role. Robson said it was a really tight game. “They jumped out to a lead with their big man dominating the game at both ends while we were making mistakes. “Eventually we settled down and played some great defence. Bradley played a great game and made plenty of free throws drawing fouls on their big danger man.” The second pool game was a Kiwi whitewashing of Nippon Japan 58-15. In the final pool game New Zealand lost to UAE 28-14 but still came home with medals around their necks.

A brief history

of Riccarton

Continued on from July 6, 2015:

The Canterbury Provincial Government was formed and it supervised the growth of the town and divided the plains into farming estates and sheep station runs.

S

election by the first colonists (those who had applied for land in England before August 1850) was made in 1851. For 150 pounds a purchaser was entitled to two land orders, one for a rural section of 50 acres and the other for a town section of a quarter acre. The land, west of Hagley Park, was thought suitable for small agricultural and mixed farms and in 1850, there was no

planning for suburban areas outside the city. Much of the land in Fendall Town (named for an early settler in the area, WC Fendall) was at first purchased by absentee landowners, but some large runholders saw the land north of Deans’ estate as suitable for their town houses. So for many years, there were only a handful of settlers. Riccarton was also slow to develop, partly because of the swampy land

and partly because Hagley Park acted as a barrier. The 1857 census gave the number of people living in the Riccarton district as 404. Apart from the Deans estate and the Ilam farm, most of the development was at either end of Riccarton Road. The establishment of a racecourse in Upper Riccarton in 1856 meant this area grew more quickly than Lower Riccarton. It was not until late in the 1870s that there was a coach service operating in Riccarton. Fendall Town remained more or less cut off from Christchurch,

Fendall Town had no church until 1876 - it formed part of the Riccarton parish and worshippers made the difficult journey to St Peter’s in Upper Riccarton - and it was not until 1883 that Fendalton was constituted as a separate parish. The railway line was begun in 1865, the northern line which cut through Riccarton just west of Hagley Park being built in 1871. The problem of the swampy land continued: the demand for a complete drainage system was not as great as in Christchurch and such areas as Sydenham mainly because most of the area was still in large blocks of land which were farmed. It was not until 1929 that a sewerage system reached to Clyde Road and nearby streets. Fendalton also had no store until after the turn of the century and no school until 1883. The Waimairi District Council was constituted in 1910, and the Borough of Riccarton came into being in 1913.

Friendly team makes

trouble-free

F

or anyone having to get dentures fitted, it can seem a daunting prospect, and it’s natural to feel apprehensive about what lies ahead. However, if you are in that situation, you will be put at your ease and the whole process will be made as smooth and troublefree as possible when you have the work done by the friendly, experienced team at Denture South. Clinical technician Andrew Johnson, who has owned and operated the business for 12 and a half years, has a team of professionals, including clinical and lab technicians, who provide a full range of denture services. These include first-time immediate dentures, full replacement dentures, partial plates and sports mouthguards. Most clients are referred to Denture South by their dentist, Andrew says, and the technicians and dentist work as a team, ensuring their clients, particularly those having first-time dentures, are made to feel comfortable. “There’s a lot of planning required, so when we first meet the client we explain

the procedures and what they can expect. Then after the dentures have been fitted, we take extra care to make sure they are coping well,” Andrew says. “We help them transition through the initial stages of having their new dentures. Then we follow up with them a week after the fitting, and it’s ongoing from there over the next six months. That follow-through is very important.” There are two Denture South clinics catering for residents across the southern and western suburbs of Christchurch, one in Barrington St, and the other in Brynley St, Hornby. Both clinics have offstreet parking. Many Denture South clients come through word-of-mouth referral, an indication of the level of satisfaction that’s provided there. Friendly, approachable and highly skilled, the Denture South team enjoys offering that service, and helping people who need to have new dentures fitted feel as comfortable and confident as possible throughout the procedure and go on to manage their new teeth with ease.

idanfield Christian School is a Year 1 to 10 school which continues to grow strongly, becoming well established in the Halswell area. We enjoy spacious grounds, modern classrooms and being actively involved in supporting the wider Halswell community. Principal Mark Richardson says that the roll has continued to grow and we are likely to finish this year with a very healthy figure of over 250 students. As a very diverse cultural and denominational group, we learn from and support each other through the learning journey. Innovative programmes are in place to best support our student learners in areas of academic achievement, character development and looking at exploring authentic purposes for each pupil. We have some parents who are non–church attending,

all levels, with the students participating in a wide range of fitness and skill-based learning activities and an award-winning sports programme. Students have opportunities for education outside the classroom with camps and cultural exchanges. Students work with specialist technology teachers in learning design processes in wood, electronics, fabric and food. There are opportunities to learn musical instruments, join the junior choir and participate in drama events. The school values are an integral part of the learning programmes helping students to develop the skills and attitudes needed for personal and academic success. The middle years of schooling are important stages of learning in which students can discover their strengths and interests in subjects which will lead them to qualifications and career choices.

athedral Grammar, where the best of 135 years of teaching experience goes hand-in-hand with the best of new and proven educative thinking – because only the best is good enough for your child! Our classrooms have walls; our pupils have desks; our maths curriculum is a real foundation for life, not a failing numeracy project; and our literature programme is rich in the greatest children’s books – the best of the old and the new. Alongside this, we have specialist science and art, wide-ranging history and geography reinforced by a comprehensive calendar of outdoor education and a worldclass music programme taught by some of the top musicians in the city. From wearable arts to robotics to sport, whether taking to the stage or taking to the mountains, Grammar is always abuzz. But don’t just take our word for it. Chris started in February. “I like being at Grammar. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.” Chris’s mother Sharon adds, “As parents, we couldn’t be happier with

Cathedral Grammar as the choice for our son in Year 7. He has fitted right in; is nurtured, challenged and exceeding his own expectations.” Dion and Vivien only joined Grammar in Term 3. When asked to give his first day a mark out of 10, Dion replied instantly: ‘452!’ Vivien feels her “education is better and I am far more challenged”. Susan emailed after her daughter spent three terms in Year 4 when the family had to move to Christchurch unexpectedly. “To know Briar was enrolled in such an amazing school, where she was looked after, well-educated and accepted, took away a huge amount of stress! The education she received has been life-changing for her. She has become a much more motivated student and also a more moral citizen. She has been exposed to a much higher level of education and opportunity than I would have ever thought possible.” To long-standing parent Reetah, “It’s of huge importance that Bruno and Milly view Grammar as their Turangawaewae – their place to stand, their place to speak and be

heard, their place of belonging. They feel this is because the staff has supported and facilitated their learning, validated their opinions and made Grammar a place where they feel safe to express who they are. For that, the staff has my greatest respect and gratitude.” If this is a perspective you’d like for your child, we’d love to meet you at Open Day on Tuesday, August 18. Alternatively, registrar Linda Marsh can arrange your tour to suit. Phone (03) 365.0385.

Tamariki School’s unique philosophy

W

e are different in many ways from other schools, as we focus on supporting each child to learn the strategies of life and to grow in all areas - emotionally, socially, cognitively and more. We provide a meaningful education, and this is evidenced by the fact that past students send their own children to Tamariki. Tamariki School was founded in 1967 by a group of people interested in providing an environment that would support primaryaged children to develop the awareness and abilities needed to positively impact their own lives. The founders were influenced by the Playcentre movement, the teachings of Dr M BevanBrown, a local psychiatrist, and the experiences and writing of the educator A S Neill (founder of Summerhill School, UK). A key principle at

Tamariki is that play enables children to deepen understanding about their world, themselves and others in a relaxed way. Another principle is community awareness, and frequent whole school meetings are used to discuss ideas and to reflect on how one person affects another. We proudly use the Maori name that has been gifted to us, as we truly are a child-focused school and we welcome children of all cultural backgrounds.

Merrin School St Bernadette - a hidden gem Become a

W

hen the Merrin School students came back to Term 3, they also came back to a new learning environment. Over the last holiday break several classrooms were altered to remove walls to make our learning environment bigger and better. Merrin School now has open plan classrooms with the latest shaped tables and bean bags in recognition of the different learning styles that students prefer. This open plan environment allows the students to flow between our classes with our self regulated learning. We are one of a growing number of schools adopting this change in the new learning style. We have BYOD (bring your own device) that runs from Year Four through to Year Eight. This allows the students to do their research online without having to wait for free devices, and enables students to access online learning sites that they use at their own learning level instead of at a general class level.

S

t Bernadette’s Catholic School is a hidden gem in Hornby. A place where children thrive in a values-based learning environment. Children are supported to achieve their full potential and to experience success in a variety of situations. The school provides children with a wide range of academic, sporting, cultural and leadership opportunities. The Special Catholic Character is woven through all areas of school life and is strengthened by a positive relationship with the parish. There are four values that also support the special character: compassion, excellence, responsibility and respect. A dedicated staff provide learning

programmes to meet the needs of all students as they become confident, connected and actively involved lifelong learners. The staff would be delighted to show you around the school and answer any questions that you or your child may have.

irkwood is a state, coeducational intermediate school. Everything we do, everything we have and all of our plans for the future are designed for children aged 10 to13 years old. These children are going through a real growth spurt – intellectually, emotionally and physically. The staff at Kirkwood are specialists with these Year 7 and 8 children, and recognise the very special attributes and challenges of this age group. Kirkwood is an inclusive school with mixed ability classes and programmes to extend and enrich our children. We are also a very well-resourced school. We have eight

Our teaching resources are modern, our computer network is up-to-date and highly specified, and our classrooms are safe and vibrant places for children to work and learn. Kirkwood is a very special school. Our children choose to come here. Year 7-8 at Oaklands School

O

aklands School is a decile 9, full primary school in Halswell. As students move into Year 7-8, we aim to help them become more resourceful, learn to communicate in a wide variety of ways and develop a sense of shared ownership in the life of the school. They are encouraged to become independent learners who have the necessary skills to take on leadership roles within the school and in the wider community. Research shows that if students feel a strong sense of belonging, they will have greater motivation and purpose in their daily engagement with staff and fellow students. They also learn to identify how they might contribute to the good of the community. The focus for the Year 7 and 8s is on consolidating skills in literacy and numeracy along with encouraging students to develop the key competencies through our values programme. These are the skills they will need to be successful, lifelong learners. In addition to these core areas, the Year 7-8 programme also covers Physical Education & Health, the Arts, Languages, Integrated Studies (Science, Social Studies, Technology), Careers and Te Reo Maori. They also participate in an annual leadership conference, fundraising activities towards the Year 8 Wellington camp, and in sports our Year 7-8s also participate in the Koru Games. A CLUB BY THE SEA!

Hailing from Dunedin,

Valley Bluegrass say they are the southernmost bluegrass band in the world. This may actually be true! Bluegrass Music can be described as an infectious high energy blend of old time country, blues, ragtime, Celtic with a dash of rock n roll. These guys, with their traditional line-up of banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dobro (guitar), and bass fiddle (upright bass), master it perfectly. Since forming in 2013, Valley Bluegrass has been in hot demand playing festivals and featured concerts. And in keeping with the spirit of the music, they busk regularly at the Otago Farmer's Market - delighting customers and stall holders with their upbeat tunes and songs. Catch them on their mini-tour around Christchurch this weekend - Friday 14th August, 7pm at Pomeroy's Old Brewery Inn on Kilmore St; Saturday 15th August, 8pm at Gustav's in the Woolston Tannery; and at the Christchurch Folk Club in the Irish Society Hall, 29 Domain Tce, Spreydon on Sunday 16th August, 7.30pm.
